Finding Freedom After Narcissistic Abuse: Why Nature Can Help You Heal

Healing after narcissistic abuse can feel like an impossible journey. Years of walking on eggshells, self-doubt, and prioritising everyone else over yourself leave deep emotional and physical scars. Reclaiming your sense of self might seem overwhelming—but there’s a gentle, powerful path forward: nature.

For many women, hiking, walking, and spending time outdoors isn’t just a leisure activity—it’s a form of somatic healing. Connecting with your body, your senses, and the world around you can help you rediscover freedom, presence, and joy.

Trauma from narcissistic relationships doesn’t only live in your mind—it lives in your body. Constant tension, anxiety, and hyper-vigilance can linger long after the relationship ends. Many survivors notice:

  • A sense of “not enough” that feels impossible to shake

  • Difficulty trusting your own feelings or instincts

  • Physical tension, shallow breathing, or fatigue

  • Emotional numbness or frequent dissociation

While therapy is incredibly valuable, combining it with somatic practices—like hiking and movement in nature—can accelerate healing and help you reconnect with yourself in a profound way.

Why Nature is a Powerful Healing Tool

1. Reconnect with your body

Every step you take grounds you. Feeling your feet on the earth reminds you that your body is safe, capable, and alive.

2. Calm your mind

Nature has a rhythm that our overstimulated brains crave. The sound of wind through trees, birdsong, or the flow of a river can quiet mental chatter and ease anxiety.

3. Rediscover joy and curiosity

Exploring new trails, noticing the changing seasons, and witnessing natural beauty reminds you that life can be expansive and joyful again.

4. Build confidence and self-trust

Climbing a hill, reaching a summit, or completing a trail is a tangible way to prove to yourself that you can trust your instincts, your body, and your decisions.

Real Stories of Healing Through Hiking

On one of my Healing Through Hiking walks, a participant told me she hadn’t felt safe in her own body for years. By the end of the day, she was laughing on a summit, proud of her strength, and noticing her own desires again—something she had thought she’d lost forever.

Stories like these are why I love guiding women in nature: every step becomes a step toward freedom, empowerment, and self-discovery.

How to Start Your Healing Journey in Nature

You don’t have to hike a mountain to start reconnecting with yourself. Here are gentle ways to begin:

  • Start small: Even a 20-minute walk in a park can help ground you.

  • Engage your senses: Notice the smells, textures, sounds, and light around you.

  • Set an intention: Focus on presence, self-compassion, or noticing moments of joy.

  • Consider guided support: Joining a group hike or working with a somatic coach ensures you feel safe and supported as you explore emotions in nature.
