Join me this October for a Pen yr Ole Wen hike in Eryri, timed for the chance to witness one of nature’s most magical phenomena: a cloud inversion. This is when a layer of cloud settles low in the valleys, completely transforming the landscape so that the mountain peaks rise above a soft, endless “sea of cloud.” From the summit of Pen yr Ole Wen, it can feel like you’re standing above the sky itself, quiet, still, and otherworldly. It’s a rare and humbling moment that turns the mountains into something almost dreamlike, and reminds you just how vast and beautiful nature really is.
On this hike we will be taking in Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, and Carnedd Llewelyn in one amazing mountain day. This hike offers a real sense of adventure, with steep ascents, open ridges (no exposure), and expansive views across the Ogwen Valley. It’s ideal for women who want to challenge themselves, build confidence on bigger mountains, and experience a classic Snowdonian skyline.
The route combines sustained climbs, rocky terrain, and broad ridge walking, with plenty of time to pause, catch your breath, and take in the scenery. It’s a full, incredibly rewarding mountain day that feels demanding yet deeply empowering, a true achievement in the heart of North Wales.
